Equality Bill

Asked what the Prime Minister’s view was on reports this morning that business leaders saw the new proposals as too expensive to implement and too bureaucratic, the PMS said that this was a matter that we had been consulting on for some time. The detail and the specifics of what exactly was going to be announced would be laid out by Harriet Harman a bit later. Asked if the Prime Minister was happy with the general principle that business would not be harmed by it, the PMS said that the general principle was that women employees made a significant contribution, as do male employees and where they do the same job, it was right as a matter of principle, that they should receive the same reward.

Asked about the issue of making it more difficult for insurers to discriminate on the basis of age, the PMS said that on the specifics of this, it was better to wait for Harriet Harman to make her statement and then people could see exactly what the Government was proposing.

Asked if the Equality Bill was part of a new union friendly agenda, the PMS replied that it was about an agenda that ensured that there was greater fairness in Britain. The Prime Minister made his position on unions very clear in PMQ’s yesterday.
