Cabinet

The Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) began by giving a summary of Cabinet. There had been an update from Jacqui Smith and the Chief Whip on where we were on 42 days, there was a presentation from Ed Balls on the National Schools Challenge, there was a discussion on immigration led by Jacqui Smith, Hazel Blears and Liam Byrne and an update from Shaun Woodward on the situation in Northern Ireland.

Asked for more information on immigration and why it had been discussed today, the PMS said that it was part of a wide-ranging discussion on the subject, mainly discussing the potential benefits that immigration brought to the country and the economy as well as its impact on public services. We had said yesterday that there would be an announcement on the impact of immigration, but that would now be coming tomorrow.
