Public Sector Pay
« Commonwealth Summit | Back to most recent briefing | Church of England »
Asked if the Government had a message for public sector workers rallying today, the PMS replied that our general message on public sector pay was that the Prime Minister of course appreciated the good jobs that many people in the public sector did on behalf of the public, and he recognised their commitment to public service. But being in Government was about having to take difficult decisions, and we had taken some difficult decisions in relation to public sector pay in recent years that has helped keep inflation down to a rate that was lower than it might have otherwise been. That in turn had created the conditions that have contributed to reductions by the Bank of England in the basic rate of interest.
Asked if there were any meetings today between Ministers and public sector pay representatives, the PMS replied that people would not normally expect him to comment on specific meetings, but most of the Prime Minister’s effort at the moment was focused on persuading people of the case for the vote that will take place in Parliament on Wednesday.
