Asked if the Prime Minister had any plans to meet with Tony Blair, the PMS said the Prime Minister spoke to Tony Blair on a regular basis, as people would expect. Asked if the Prime Minister had seen the interview with him this morning, the PMS said that the Prime Minister was in his meeting on knife crime.
Asked if the Prime Minister had responded to the letter from the First Minister of Scotland, the PMS replied that as we had said yesterday, it was not clear at this point how many letters there were in existence. Once we had a better idea of this, we would take a view as to how and whether to respond. The Chancellor had addressed this issue in an interview he gave at the weekend and there had also been exchanges on BBC Radio Scotland this morning involving Malcolm Wicks as well and both had made clear the substance of the Government’s responses.
Asked if there were any concerns about prosecuting 16 year olds for crimes involving knives, the PMS said that this was something that we had been discussing with the police, the Ministry of Justice and the Crown Prosecution Service in recent days and weeks and there was general support for the proposals that were agreed at the meeting as people would expect.
