President Barroso

Asked a similar question on President Barroso’s visit, the PMS said that there would be an opportunity for the Prime Minister and President Barroso to speak after their meeting. The main purpose of the meeting was to talk about the upcoming European Council meeting in a couple of week’s time. The main items they would be discussing would be in the areas of energy, oil and the impact that high oil prices were having on the European economy and climate change.

Asked if there was anything that Britain and the EU could actually do to boost oil production, the PMS said that he did not think it was just about OPEC and increasing supply in the short run; it was also about what more could be done to deal with issues on the demand side and what more we could do in the European economy to reduce our dependence on oil in the medium and long term and that would have a short-term impact on the price.

Put that food prices were an important issue on the Prime Minister’s agenda and the EU itself had been blamed for its restrictive tariffs, the PMS said that he was sure food prices would come up as well. People knew what our position was on cap reform and the importance of it and he was sure that would be an issue that the Prime Minister would raise with President Barroso.
