Bank Holidays

Asked if the Prime Minister supported the idea of a Bank Holiday being a day to celebrate Britishness, the PMS replied that the Goldsmith Review had given a number of recommendations on this matter a few months ago and that there was still an ongoing debate. The Government and the Prime Minister was sympathetic to the principals of the Goldsmith Review and the general direction of its recommendations and that Liam Byrne had today given contributions to the ongoing debate.

Asked if the Prime Minister had a view as to whether we needed an additional Bank Holiday, the PMS said that that was different to what had been proposed but that there were arguments on both sides. The Prime Minister could see the arguments for having an additional Bank Holiday but you had to take into account the affect that that would have on the economy and therefore it was important to listen to the view of businesses.

Asked where we were regarding bank holidays, the PMS said that he did not have the exact timetable but that the purpose of the Goldsmith Review was to provoke a public debate on this issue; this was now clearly underway and the Government would consider the recommendations of the Goldsmith Review in light of that debate.
