UN/Food and Agriculture Organisation Summit

Asked what the Prime Minister thought about Robert Mugabe attending the UN/ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) summit and what Douglas Alexander’s attitude would be if he encountered Mugabe, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) replied that our position on Mugabe was well known and we thought it particularly unfortunate that he had decided to attend this meeting given what he had done in relation to contributing to difficulties with food supplies in Zimbabwe. Nonetheless, Douglas Alexander would be attending but would not be meeting with Mr Mugabe or having anything to do with him.

Asked what Douglas Alexander would do if Mr Mugabe was in the same room as him and involved in the same discussion, the PMS said that Douglas Alexander would have no engagement or interaction with Mr Mugabe.

Put that in the past the Prime Minister had refused to attend meetings that Mr Mugabe had attended, the PMS replied that the UN/FAO meeting was extremely important and would cover the very important and topical issue of food security, which affected millions of people around the world.
