» Wednesday, March 26, 2008MPs’ Expenses
Asked if the Prime Minister supported the Committee’s decision to appeal the decision on MP’s expenses, the PMS replied that this was a matter for the Committee; as we had said consistently, the Prime Minister is relaxed about publication of his expenses but this needed to be dealt with by proper procedures. If the House authorities decided to publish individual MP’s expenses including the Prime Minister’s, that would be something he would be entirely happy to do. Asked if he could confirm that the Government had no role in the provision of a second lawyer to the Committee, the PMS said he had no information on that and these were matters for the House authorities. The general view of the public is that MPs of whatever political persuasion are only in politics to feather their own nest. The public feels that MPs have no idea what is happening outside Westminster and are appalled just how deeply their noses are into the trough. Having seen both conservative and labour governments, all are seen as sleazy.
