Asked to assess Britain’s relationship with Israel, the PMS replied that the Foreign Office had responded to the Guardian’s story and they had been clear that they would not comment on leaked documents. Our position, encouraging all signatories of the non-proliferation treaty to abide by that, remained the same but we also recognised Israel’s position needed to be looked at in a regional context, bearing in mind that their neighbours included Iran who denied the right of Israel to exist at all.
