Asked if the Government was concerned about the profiteering of British Gas, the PMS said that profits were a commercial matter for the company. However, in January, the Chancellor asked that Ofgem assess how the market was operating in terms of competitiveness. That report came back and suggested that there was no evidence of any operations that were not within the guidelines, but this was something that the Treasury and BERR continued to monitor.
