Asked if the Government was aware that the man who was now going to run Northern Rock was a "non-dom", the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) replied that he was not going to comment on any individual’s tax status. The key thing was that we had the best person for the job, and the Chancellor and the Prime Minister believed that Ron Sandler was the best man for the job. Asked if we were paying Ron Sandler "on-shore" or "off-shore", the PMS replied that his contractual arrangements were a matter between him and the Treasury. Asked if Northern Rock could be exempt from the Freedom of Information Act, the PMS replied that this was probably a question for the Information Commissioner and the Treasury. Surely now that Mr Sandler is in the employ of the Government then we can expect his wife to become Finance Director, his son part time marketing director and his Aunt Doris to be awarded the cleaning contract !
