Police Pay

Asked how the Prime Minister proposed to meet the concerns of police officers and would he be meeting with any of those officers marching through London tomorrow, the PMS said that the Government had made its position on the subject very clear. The Prime Minister and the Home Secretary thought that police officers did an excellent job but some tough decisions had to be taken last year in relation to last years pay settlement and we staged the police settlement as we did with a number of other public settlements. These measures were necessary to keep inflation down and on target and this enabled the Bank of England to cut interest rates. When asked, the PMS said that the Prime Minister had no plans to meet with the police officers.
