Asked for a comment on the progress made by President Mbeki on Zimbabwe, the PMS replied that he was sure Zimbabwe would be an issue that was discussed throughout the course of the weekend. In terms of what President Mbeki was doing, the Government welcomed the mediation initiative. The PMS added that the Government hoped that should agreement be reached, it was then delivered upon. Asked if the Government was sceptical about success in the matter, the PMS repeated that the Government welcomed the initiative and thought President Mbeki was making good progress. Asked to give an idea of what the initiative was, the PMS replied that it was about moving Zimbabwe to a situation where there could be a return to proper democracy. Asked if this was based on brokering a deal between Zanu PF and the MDC, the PMS replied that it did.
