Terror Laws

Asked if the Prime Minister had been in touch with leaders of the Opposition to discuss changes in terror laws, the PMS said that there had been contact and discussion with the opposition parties, and there would certainly be further discussions when things moved forward.

Asked if there had been recent contact, the PMS said that his understanding was that Jacqui Smith had been in touch with her opposite numbers.

Asked if this was something that would involve the Prime Minister directly, the PMS said that at the moment, this was something was being dealt with by the Home Secretary.

Put that the Shadow Home Secretary today had ruled out any co-operation on 90 days detention, so did this mean that it would not be brought forward again, the PMS replied that he did not want to comment on anything the Opposition had said. As we had said before, we thought that there was a case for going beyond 28 days and we wanted to do this on a consensual basis. We would be bringing forward further proposals shortly.

Put that if the Opposition came out and said that they would not play ball, that was not a consensus, the PMS replied that he did not want to comment on what the Opposition had said. We had said that we could see a case for going beyond 28 days and we wanted to operate on a consensual basis.

Asked to confirm whether there would be contact in order to achieve consensus before the proposals were published or afterwards, the PMS said that there would be an ongoing process of discussion, leading right up to the process of legislating for these changes.

Asked again if there might be contact before the proposals were published next Wednesday, the PMS replied that there would be on-going discussion.
