Asked if the Prime Minister was concerned about the different messages coming from Cabinet regarding our relationship with America, the PMS replied that there was a very clear message coming from the Cabinet, which was also reiterated by David Miliband in an interview at the weekend and by the Prime Minister on Monday about reinforcing the relationship with the US. Asked if the Prime Minister had discussed with Bertie Ahern, or was planning to discuss with Chancellor Merkel the row over inviting Robert Mugabe to the EU Summit, the PMS replied that that was not discussed with the Taoiseach, and we were still many months away from the EU/Africa summit. The PMS added that there were still many opportunities to find a diplomatic solution that was agreeable to all parties by then.
