Citizen Juries

Asked about citizen’s juries and consultation on the draft legislative programme, the PMS said regional Ministers and the relevant Secretaries of States would take this forward. They would take forward the consultative progress on the draft legislative programmes and hold consultations throughout the country. People were able to also express their views on the draft legislative programme on the Cabinet Office and the Leader of the House of Commons websites. In terms of the specific events journalists should keep in touch with the Cabinet Office.

Asked whether regional Ministers would take forward regional events, the PMS said they and the relevant Sectaries of State would take the process forward.

Asked whether these events would be by invitation only, the PMS said all these issues would become clear as the events were organised.

Asked how the citizen’s jury would be selected, the PMS said there had been a number of these events in the past that had involved the Prime Minister. That would be a basis of what the model may be, but there was no particular fixed concept in mind. It would be determined event by event, issue by issue.

Asked whether it would be similar to jury service i.e. it would be a offence if you did not turn up, the PMS said this was something for consideration in the Lord Goldsmith’s review of citizenship!

Asked whether there would be one event, the PMS said there would be various events for different parts of the legislative programme.

Asked whether the citizen jury events would be Government or Labour Party events, the PMS said this was a consultation on the Government’s legislative programme.

Asked whether there had been any consultation with Buckingham Palace, the PMS said this innovation was part of the package of reforms on constitution matters announced last week, in which there had been full consultation with Buckingham Palace.
