Asked what the Prime Minister thought about the decision to award Salman Rushdie a knighthood, the PMS said that the Prime Minister believes the decision to award Salman Rushdie was made on the basis on his contribution to literature. The Foreign & Commonwealth Office made it clear yesterday no offence was intended to the Islam faith. Asked if the Prime Minister was a reader of Salman Rushdie, the PMS said he had not asked the Prime Minister that direct question.
