Asked what the Government’s policy was on a) contact with, and b) negotiations with Hamas, the PMS replied that for the definitive on the record line, journalists should speak to the Foreign Office. But our position had not changed. Asked if the Government were engaged in any negotiations with Hamas, the PMS replied that there was no political contact with Hamas. Asked if the UK’s position on this was in line with the Quartet’s, the PMS replied that our position was that we believed that Hamas should adhere to the Quartet principles.
