Rubbish Collection

Put to him that the Prime Minister in his interview this morning had talked about "better ways" of recycling, and asked to clarify what these were, the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) replied that it was not so much better ways of recycling, as better ways of encouraging consumers to engage in recycling. But this was a matter for local authorities, and local authorities had different ways of trying to incentifise us all to contribute to recycling. The Prime Minister was referring to the different ways in which local authorities can do this.

Put to him that local authorities were saying that they have been forced to introduce fortnightly collections through DEFRA schemes to meet EU targets, the PMOS replied that there were overall targets, but how individual authorities met those targets was a matter for individual authorities.

Asked that given the Prime Minister had said he was a "traditionalist" when it came to bin collections, how regularly were the bins collected from Downing Street, the PMOS replied, choosing his words very carefully, that due to the weight of rubbish generated by a large office, both recycling and general rubbish were collected on a weekly basis.

Asked what problems the Prime Minister saw with fortnightly collections, the PMOS replied that we each had our personal views, depending on factors such as whether we lived in the country or the inner city for example.
