Avian Flu

Asked if COBRA was meeting this morning to discuss the avian flu outbreak, and was there any further information, the PMOS replied that in terms of COBRA, it was better for the department concerned to comment. DEFRA had taken the lead and they had put in place a protection zone of 3 kilometres radius, a surveillance zone of 10 kilometres, and a wider restricted zone. The PMOS said that David Miliband would give an update in Parliament at 1530 this afternoon.

  1. I’m SOOOOO glad the government is handling this! They have such an impressive track record. Incidentally, I read earlier that they have ordered Tamiflu for 1/4 of the population. Firstly, it begs the question; why only 1/4? Secondly, it begs another question; why are they stockpiling Tamiflu when there is no proof that it has any effect on Avian Flu whatsoever? And the fact that Tamiflu has killed quite a number of those who have taken it so far by overstimulating their immune system is beside the point too, I guess. I suppose the fact that Ex-US Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld was chairman of the board of the company that patented Tamiflu until 2001 (Gilead Sciences Inc.), and still has a large financial stake in the company (and therefore to this day is raking in a huge profit from the sale of Tamiflu), has nothing to do with it?
