Asked to characterise the discussions between Margaret Beckett, Foreign Secretary and Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister and why there was a need to reiterate our request for co-operation, the PMOS said as both Ministers were at the G8 meeting in Amman it was a chance to repeat the request in person and there was nothing more to it than that. As we had repeatedly said we will proceed on the basis of evidence, meaning the police will establish the facts first, but equally as the Prime Minister said there will be no political or diplomatic bar to the investigation. Asked if the Foreign Secretary had met Mr. Lavrov in London, the PMOS said no, the meeting was at the G8 in Amman. Asked if we were satisfied that full cooperation had been given by the Russians, the PMOS said that he had no reason to say anything other than yes at this stage, but the investigation was in its early days and it would be best to see where we get to.
