Poland

Asked if the Prime Minister had expressed concerns to the Poles over the direction of government there, the PMOS said that the UK had a very good, ongoing relationship with Poland. We are working together both in Afghanistan and Iraq where they have a presence. We also believe that Poland is a very important partner for us in Europe. We share a very similar view in Europe, as nation states. We also, as confirmed at Lahti, have similar concerns over energy, climate change and energy security and the need to develop alternative sources of energy. There is a rich and historic relationship there as well as a forward facing future in Europe.

Asked as Poland was in new Europe, not old Europe will the Prime Minister be asking the Polish Prime Minister to give more troops to Afghanistan, the PMOS said that Poland had already said they would give another 1,000 extra troops for Afghanistan which will be available for deployment in southern Afghanistan. Poland has shown that it is prepared to commit resources and we strongly welcome that, as we do contributions from 37 other countries in Afghanistan, and we do not recognise a division between old Europe and New Europe, it’s one Europe.

Put to him that the smaller groups of troops did not want to go to southern Afghanistan, the PMOS said that Poland had said that it would accelerate the deployment of over 1,000 troops, which is not a small number, and they would be available for deployment to support operations in southern Afghanistan.

  2. The very fact that we are "working with Poland in Afghanistan and Iraq" should alert everyone to the fact that democracy is as dead and buried in Poland as it is everywhere else!
