Geoff Hoon

Asked if the Prime Minister had a view on Geoff Hoon’s words earlier today about his departure date from No10, the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) said that the Prime Minister had said what he had said last week, and that was very clear. The Prime Minister had said at the time that that was all he was going to say, and that was all the PMOS was going to say as well. The Prime Minister was getting on with his job, both in the UK, as well as getting on with his job in the Middle East at the weekend. That was what the Prime Minister was focused on.

Asked if the Prime Minister thought that Ministers should now just stop talking about it, the PMOS replied that it was a matter for Ministers; the Prime Minister was focused on getting on with the job.

Asked if we agreed with John Hutton who had said this morning that people should just "get off this obsession with dates, and concentrate on the business of Government", the PMOS said that what the Prime Minister had said last week was that he was getting on with the job. That was what the Prime Minister believed was in the national interest, and that was what he was doing.

Asked if there were any plans for the Prime Minister to speak to Geoff Hoon, the PMOS said as people knew, he did not brief on the Prime Minister’s discussions with Cabinet colleagues.

Asked if the Prime Minister had full confidence in Mr. Hoon, the PMOS replied that he did.
