Lord Falconer Speech

Put that Lord Falconer had attacked Guantanamo Bay during his speech in Sydney today, and did the Prime Minister share Lord Falconer’s sentiments, the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) replied that the Prime Minister all along had said that Guantanamo was an anomaly. The Prime Minister believed that Guantanamo should be closed, but he also understood the reasons why prisoners were placed there from Afghanistan. The Prime Minister thought that the people there should be put before some sort of tribunal system. The Americans had since said that it was their intention to try to work towards closure, and that was obviously welcome.

Put that the Americans were trying to reclassify Guantanamo, the PMOS said what they had also said was that they were trying to work towards some kind of tribunal system which would end up with the closure of Guantanamo Bay.

Asked why we were "stepping up the language now", the PMOS said that if people looked at some of the things that had been said by various members of the Government, it would be apparent that we had made our view very clear in the past, as had the Prime Minister. There was a genuine dilemma here which had to be dealt with. However, we believed that it was better that it was done through a tribunal system.
