Asked what agenda was for the Prime Minister’s meeting with the Algerian President to day, the PMOS said that they would be talking about regional matters, Africa, cooperation on counter-terrorism matters. They would also talk about energy where by 2010 Algeria was forecast to provide 12% of our gas and be Europe’s second largest source of gas after Russia and BP had an investment of $4billion there. Asked if we were any closer to an agreement for Algeria to take back suspected terrorists, the PMOS said that discussions on deportations with assurances were continuing and would continue beyond this visit. As with all discussions you weren’t there until you were there but we were making progress. Asked if the phrase "deportations with assurances" was a new way of saying memoranda of understanding, the PMOS said no. The reason for that turn of phrase in relation to Algeria was that the Algerian government had a charter for peace and reconciliation which allowed the Algerian Diaspora to return without fear of recrimination or maltreatment and so we didn’t call it an MOU, that was diplomacy for you. If the prime Minister going to Algeria is there any chance to speak to the Algeria government and the people of Algeria or have a vote in Algeria to bring back oversea visiters to the region. Look at the Berlitz Country Guide Algeria copyright 1990 book Entreprise National du Livre, Alger, I got the book in Waterstone of Exeter UK in 1993. Lots of youths in Algeria asked me why you have got a penpal in algeria and you have not visited our country in one of the chat rooms. I told the youths in the chat room it is a strange country with terrorists in Algeria and Algeria is not like any other western countrys when it comes about a ordinery English person going inside Algeria. You must have a letter and if you have any other stamps in the passport like from Isreal or any other country that Algeria don’t like the look off. They could kick me back to England. I would like the Algerian dinars to buy in Exeter England in are local travel agenceys if that alright with Algeria.
