The Prime Minister's Official Spokesman (PMOS) advised journalists that the timing of the publication of the Cabinet Secretary's response had yet to be settled because time was needed to collate and copy the relevant material. He said that he would be happy to bring forward the 3.45pm press briefing were any further information to come to light before then. Asked whether the Prime Minister had meant to widen the scope of the inquiry to include the Home Office, the Prime Minister's Official Spokesman (PMOS) said that the Prime Minister had not widened the scope of the inquiry. All he had said was that if any future allegations were made the government would respond to them. In terms of the Home Office it had already responded, not just mildly, but with a categorical denial that anything untoward had happened in its dealings with the Italian government's request. Asked about the allegations from the Italian prosecution team that the Home Office had "sabotaged" the investigation, the Prime Minister's Official Spokesman said that the Home Office had dealt with the issue last night, and the PMOS said he had nothing further to add to what they had said. The PMOS underlined that this was handled in the normal way, and the criticism would be if we had handled it any other way. Asked if the Prime Minister would consider meeting the families of those who had fallen in Iraq, the PMOS said that the Prime Minister had met the relatives of some of those killed, and he had corresponded with others. The Prime Minister believed that the proper way to do it was in private, and therefore, that was how he intended to continue to do so.
