The PMOS welcomed the unanimous agreement today at the EU Competition Council on the REACH (Regulation, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) agreement, which was something we had been seeking for some time. In particular we welcomed the role of the new German administration in reaching agreement today. Asked what the Government’s view of the recent finding by the Council of Europe concerning extraordinary rendition of prisoners through Europe, the PMOS said that we had stated the position in terms of this country. Jack Straw as part of the presidency role had responded to Condoleezza Rice’s statement on the matter. We had nothing further to add.
