Iraq

Asked if the Prime Minister was concerned that the Iraqi constitution did not seem to be maintaining the secular character he had hoped for, in particular with regards to women’s rights, the PMS said that there was a meeting today of the constitutional committee. The Iraqis themselves had made it clear that they were working towards the August 15 deadline for the draft constitution and we should wait for that draft rather than speculating on what it might or might not say.

  1. No speculation needed… It seems that Islam has moved from being a legislative source for the draft Constitution to a situation where it is now forbidden to pass a law that contradicts Islam’s rulings. Sharia law is open to wide interpretation and hence corrupt use: a woman can be beheaded or stoned to death under these laws for adultery, depending on the ruling in a particular country.
I read today that although 90% of the document is finished, differences remain on "issues including federalism, the role of Islam, distribution of national wealth, and the name of the country"! A lot to get sorted out in 14 days, and not a lot of hope there for the women subject to an Islamic system of justice.
