Inquiries

Asked for further comment on the appointment of Alan Budd to hold the inquiry into David Blunkett, in the wake of comments in Alistair Graham's annual report, the PMOS said, as we had said at the time, we believed it was better to fit the individual who leads an inquiry to the nature of that inquiry, rather than have a standing group of people who would be made to fit a particular set of circumstances.

Royal Wedding

Asked what determined the title that Camilla Parker Bowles would have once Prince Charles succeeded to the throne the Prime Minister's Official Spokesman (PMOS) said that the position at the moment was limited as to what her title would be upon marriage. That was the situation at present. In terms of any future events people should wait until such events arose.

Travellers

Asked if the Prime Minister agreed with Kevin McNamara that Michael Howard's comments "had something of a whiff of the gas chamber" the PMOS said that he would not comment on party political matters or what the leader of the opposition had said. But in terms of travellers he would simply repeat what he had this morning which was that in the Government's view you had to deal with the root cause of this problem. The root cause of this problem was that there was a shortage of legal sites. Therefore it was not simply enough to say that you had to deal with illegal sites you, also had to provide legal sights. Otherwise you were just moving the problem from one part of the country to another.

Anti Semitic adverts/comments

Asked if the Prime Minister expected to be challenged by the Board of Deputies this evening about the anti Semitic adverts put up by the Labour Party, the Prime Minister's Official Spokesman (PMOS) said that they were Labour Party posters and it would therefore be inappropriate for him to comment on them.

Travellers

Asked why Yvette Cooper was talking about gypsies and travellers in her speech, the PMOS said she would be putting forward what we believed the core of the problem was. It was that there was not a sufficient number of legal sites, therefore the core of the problem was not about having new powers to deal with illegals. We had already developed the Temporary Stop notices that allowed people to stop a camp. The core issue was the number of legal sites. The PMOS said if illegals were moved on, then they had to have somewhere to go.

Cautioned Minister

Asked if the Prime Minister was happy to have a minister in his Government who had been cautioned by the police, the PMOS told people that as Alan Johnson had said yesterday, it was a private matter, and he believed the minister involved was a very good minister.

Hospital Debt

Asked about the Times splash about the Health service, and what sort of service was it if the Government was "pouring billions" into individual funds that were still going overdraw, the Prime Minister's Spokesman (PMS) that people should put the story into perspective. The figures represented a tiny fraction of the NHS budget, and spending in the NHS had increased this year by £6 billion. The money was speeding up services, reducing waiting times, and providing more staff. The PMS said the reason some trusts were predicting a deficit at this stage was because some of them had crammed twelve months work into the first ten months of the financial year. Therefore, far from being a story about financial crisis, it was actually showing the NHS working and providing a good service to patients.

Lord Birt

Asked if it was correct the Prime Minister had commissioned work from Lord Birt about the Cabinet Office and the Treasury, the PMS said the story was completely without foundation, and was completely wrong.

DfT Select Committee/Tube

Asked what the Prime Minster's view was on the Transport Select Committee's report criticising the Tube, the PMS said the DfT had set out their views yesterday. We were into the first three years of a thirty-year contract, and there was a lot of work going on. We expected the current improvements on the Tube to continue, and we expected more improvements to take place over the coming years.
