African Detainees
Asked if there was any further information on the North African detainees currently in Belmarsh prison being returned to their countries, the PMOS said discussions were ongoing, but he was not going to provide a running commentary on it.
Asked repeatedly about the discussions, and if all the detainees were being considered, the PMOS said he was not going to comment until the discussions were finished.
Asked if the detainees would be sent back to their home countries, or somewhere else, the PMOS said it was clear that it would be the country where they had come from. He stressed we were not holding them, and they were free to leave at any time. The problem was, getting the country to take them.
Asked about Charles Clarke’s comments that he was "happy to assist Bakri to leave the country if that is what he desired" the PMOS replied that the Home Secretary had said the facts about the case needed to be clarified.
