Letter from M. Nicolas Sarkozy to David Cameron

The President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, has sent a letter of congratulations to David Cameron following his appointment as Prime Minister.

Dear Prime Minister,

Personally and in the name of the French people, I want to congratulate you sincerely on your appointment to the post of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. I most warmly wish you every success in the conduct of your high office.

I look forward to the prospect of working with you on strengthening the very close cooperation and exceptional ties woven between our two countries. As I had the opportunity of stressing at the time of my March 2008 State Visit, I believe in the strength, vitality and essential nature of the entente between the United Kingdom and France. These ties are rooted in history. On the seventieth anniversary of the Appeal issued by General de Gaulle on the BBC airwaves, I shall be going to London on 18 June this year, to pay tribute to the generous welcome the British people gave the Free French.

In a radically changing world and in the face of the problems we are confronting, I am more convinced than ever that, together, we are making our voice heard and can act effectively. Side by side, our two countries carry greater weight in the world. Side by side, they can contribute more effectively to preventing and resolving conflicts. The reforms necessary to overcome the financial crisis and avoid its repetition, the fight against climate change and initiatives promoting green growth are some of the issues on which, together, we shall have to display resolve. I am counting on working in close cooperation with you, particularly looking ahead to the forthcoming French G8/G20 presidency.

Partners in the world of the 21st century, the United Kingdom and France are also united in the European project, where their futures are at stake. Legitimately committed to their identities, proud of their pasts, our two countries have sovereignly chosen to stand at the heart of the European Union in order to make their voices heard there and so that Europe s collective voice is heard in the world. With this aim in view, I am keen for Franco-British relations to continue
