Defence Spending

Asked about claims that, when Chancellor, the Prime Minister had not spent enough money on defence, the PMS said that when the Prime Minister had been Chancellor, there had been increases in real terms in defence spending, significantly so in some years, reversing the trend in defence spending prior to 1997. The Prime Minister, when Chancellor, always strove to ensure that the military had the resources that they needed and we took the decisions necessary to do that.
