ID Cards

Asked about speculation in the press about ID cards, the PMS pointed out that any new Secretary of State would always want to get properly briefed on the key issues of his or her Department. Alan Johnson had himself said on Saturday that in his very first interview as Home Secretary he had made clear that identity cards were a manifesto commitment and that legislation governing their introduction was passed in 2006. We remained on progress to bring in what the Home Secretary believed had widespread public support.
