» Monday, February 16, 2009Job cuts at Mini
Asked whether the Prime Minister thought the job cuts at Mini had been done in a fair way, the PMS replied that this was clearly disappointing news and that the government is doing and will do everything it can in order to help those affected. Asked what the government can do in practical terms and whether the loan guarantee scheme for the car industry announced last month was happening, the PMS replied that in practical terms this meant Job Centre Plus and the regional development agency working with the company and the individuals affected to help them retrain or find alternative employment. On the wider question, the government announced a package of support for the car industry a couple of weeks ago and that we were in the process of implementing that. Asked whether we were still waiting for European approval for it to go ahead, the PMS said that that was not his understanding but to check with the department. Put that many of the workers at Mini were agency workers who don’t qualify for redundancy, the PMS replied that the individuals involved should speak to their local Job Centre Plus to see what help is available for them.
