Bank Bonuses
« Torture | Back to most recent briefing | Jeremy Clarkson »
Asked if it was correct that the Prime Minister had the final say on bonuses in banks with a public stake or did that only apply to the top executives, the PMS said that as he had said yesterday, the Treasury were in discussion with the banks about remuneration structures as part of the wider discussion on Government support for the banks. The PMS said he would not pre-judge where those discussions would end up at this stage nor where the final decision would be made.
The PMS added that Lord Mandelson had made clear the view that public opinion on bonuses and on the remuneration structures that were proposed by the banks would be quite clear:
They ve also got to consider how it looks and how it seems when those mistakes had been made or those losses had been made (and) ..people are getting paid quite exorbitant sums of money.
