Crime

Asked whether crime had come up at Cabinet, the PMS confirmed that there had been a general discussion about crime. Occasionally the Cabinet took stock of major policy issues and today they took stock of the Government s policy on crime and the action that we were taking in order to build on the 39% reduction in crime since 1997.

Asked if they had discussed crime in general, the PMS said it was quite a wide-ranging discussion, but there was discussion around some of the criminal activity that was of particular concern to people at the moment, such as knife crime, gangs and burglary.

Put that there was a Burglary Summit tomorrow, the PMS said that there was a general discussion around the action we were continuing to take to help deal with burglary, where we had seen a 55% reduction in burglary over the last 10 years or so.

Asked if there was any discussion about crime being linked to the current economic situation, the PMS said that our position and this was very much the mood at Cabinet, was that there was no inevitability in the link between an economic slowdown and an increase in crime. There was action that the Government could take in order to keep crime down and in fact reduce it, even during a difficult economic period and that was what we were determined to do.
