Northern Ireland

Asked for the Prime Minister s view on the proposal of paying compensation to the families of all those killed during Northern Ireland s troubles, the Prime Minister s Spokesman (PMS) said that we had just received the report, we would carefully consider its findings and respond in due course.

Asked if the Prime Minister could understand peoples anger relating to compensation being offered to terrorists families, the PMS said that there was a range of issues that this report covered. We would consider the report with great care and respond to it in due course.

Asked if the Prime Minister had sympathy with the argument that some of the enquiries had been dragging on too long and were very expensive, the PMS said that there was a longstanding set of procedures going back many years, as part of the political settlement that had emerged in Northern Ireland after the Good Friday Agreement, and it was important that we respected those.
