Asked why the Prime Minister had engaged with David Davis in the argument about terror laws through his speech this morning, the PMS said that the idea that these issues had suddenly become important issues in the last couple of days was absurd. These had been major issues of public debate for many years. It had been an important issue fro the Government over the last ten years, it was something the Prime Minister had spoken about when he was Chancellor and the situation was constantly changing. It was because of the constantly changing terror, security and criminal threat we had to face that the methods we had to use, had to change as well. We would try to find a way of responding to those changes in threats whilst protecting individual freedoms and that’s what we were doing.
Asked whether the Prime Minister had spoken in his speech about the Information Commissioner carrying out an annual review, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister had said that the Information Commissioner would produce an annual report for MP’s.
