Cuba

Asked about the British Government’s attitude to sanctions against Cuba, the PMS replied that the British Government’s position was consistent with the EU common position; the EU common position was kept under review.

Put that the British Government used to be in favour of sanctions, the PMS said that that was the existing EU position, but that that position was kept under review.

Put that some of our partners in Europe did not share our position, the PMS said that there was an ongoing review of EU sanctions in relation to Cuba, which was looked at on a regular basis and would continue to be looked at in the future.

Put that there was a suggestion that the EU position was changing, the PMS said that that was a matter for EU leaders to discuss. There was a longstanding EU position, which we supported and that was kept under review.

Asked if the Prime Minister would be raising the issue of Cuba at the European Summit, the PMS said that that depended on whether or not Cuba was on the agenda.

Asked if the Prime Minister would put Cuba on the agenda, the PMS said that there were no specific plans to put it on the agenda.
