42 Days
Asked if the Government was seriously worried about losing the vote on 42 days, the PMS replied that there was a general view at Cabinet that there were some reports in the media this morning that were getting a bit ahead of themselves; the Government had always remained confident of its arguments, but it was premature to suggest, at this point, that it was the Government’s view that we now had all the votes necessary.
Asked if there had been any comments about Jacqui Smith’s speech to the Parliamentary Labour Party yesterday, the PMS said that he did not want to stray into political territory but that there had been a general recognition at Cabinet that Jacqui Smith’s performance was a very good one.
Asked what more needed to be done to win the vote, the PMS said that there would be conversations with MPs as the Government continued to make its case over the days ahead.
Asked if the amendments put down today would be the last ones or if the Government was open to further amendments, the PMS said that the amendments that the Government was setting out today would be comprehensive in their nature.
