Truancy

Asked what the Prime Minister thought about new truancy figures given his policy regarding compulsory education until the age of 18, the PMS replied that his understanding was that overall absence from school was at its lowest level ever; on average 58,000 more pupils were at school than would have been if we had the same absence rates as ten years ago. Clearly there was always more that could be done and the department was working on that. The Prime Minister did not think that that should in some way effect the important policy that the Government had set out to try and encourage more people to stay on in education up to the age of 18.
