Asked if the Government was surprised about the decision by the Office of National Statistics to keep Northern Rock on the public balance sheet, the PMS said no. As the Treasury and Chancellor had already said, any impact of Northern Rock on the Government balance sheet would be temporary and exceptional and the code for fiscal stability had provisions for such situations.
